Ce champ d\u2019\u00e9tudes est d\u00e9sormais pris en consid\u00e9ration pour lui-m\u00eame et non pas seulement comme un moment de transition entre l\u2019Antiquit\u00e9 et le Moyen-\u00c2ge. La synth\u00e8se que propose Bernadette Cabouret confirme et renforce cette \u00e9volution g\u00e9n\u00e9rale. L\u2019Empire romain d\u2019Orient est pour la premi\u00e8re fois approch\u00e9 sp\u00e9cifiquement par le biais de la question soci\u00e9tale. Cette perspective permet d\u2019enrichir consid\u00e9rablement la compr\u00e9hension que l\u2019on peut se faire de la p\u00e9riode.
